Ultrasonic testing of heavy forgings: what the report means

Every forging over 500 kg leaves the plant with an ultrasonic report. It tells you more than pass or fail, if you know where to look.

• The acceptance class that was applied, and the standard it comes from
• The scan plan: which surfaces, which probes, which directions
• Every indication above the recording level, even when it is acceptable

An empty report means nothing was recorded, not that nothing was scanned. Ask for the scan plan if it is not attached.
