01The brief

Mandrels held to a tight hardness band

The cold-rolling line's coiler mandrels were wearing unevenly because the old segments had soft spots. The replacement had to hold a narrow hardness band along its full length.

We quenched and tempered four mandrel segments in our 6 m furnace with thermocouples along each part, then straightened and machined them. A hardness map for every segment went into the dossier.

02What we did

One furnace, one record per segment

  • Quenched and tempered four segments in the 6 m furnace, surveyed to AMS 2750
  • Logged thermocouple positions, times and temperatures for every load
  • Straightened and machined the segments after heat treatment
  • Mapped hardness along each segment and shipped the charts with the parts

“The hardness maps were the first thing our metallurgist asked for, and they were already in the box.”
