01The brief

Twenty-four cooling rings inside a fixed furnace stop

Blast furnace 6 was coming down for a planned stop, and every tuyere cooling ring had to be on site before the blow-down. There was no slack in the date.

We poured the rings in low-carbon cast steel from the client’s patterns, annealed them in two furnace loads and machined the cooling channels to drawing. Every ring was pressure tested before it was packed.

02What we did

Poured, annealed, machined, tested

  • Poured 24 rings in low-carbon cast steel, sampled on the spectrometer before every pour
  • Annealed in two furnace loads with calibrated charts for each
  • Machined the cooling channels to the customer drawing on 5-axis centres
  • Pressure tested every ring and tied its 3.1 certificate to the heat number
