The tolerances are the tightest in the building, the bearing seats have usually fretted, and the customer has a machine standing still while we work. This is how a 1,400 mm grinding spindle went through the shop in October.

Strip and measure

The spindle came in still assembled. Bearings out, seals out, every seat measured on the CMM against the original drawing. Both bearing seats were 0.03 mm undersize and out of round by 0.008 mm: the classic signature of a bearing that has been spinning on the shaft instead of in its housing.

The seats nobody wants to talk about

There are two ways to bring a worn seat back. Metal-spray and grind, or hard-chrome and grind. Both work. Both are refused by half the spindle manufacturers, who would rather sell a new shaft. We chrome-plated the seats 0.15 mm oversize and ground them back to the drawing: IT5, roundness 0.002 mm, surface Ra 0.2.

A plated and ground seat is not a compromise. Measured on the CMM it is indistinguishable from the original, and the plating is harder.

Balance and test

Balanced to G1 at 6,000 rpm, then run in on the test rig for four hours with temperature logged at both bearings. Rise at the front bearing after four hours: 11 °C, inside the manufacturer’s limit.

The bill

Eleven working days, 38 per cent of the price of a new spindle, and a 24-month warranty identical to new. The machine was back in production on a Monday.

[6
26,25,24
post-47","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-remanufacturing","tag-balancing","tag-grinding","tag-spindles
["GET
